Motivation Monday: Consistency or Change?

You’ve heard the advice before.  Be consistent to be successful over the long term.  Do the same basic things, eat less, move more, and don’t expect quick results.  It takes time to lose fat and gain muscle, and you won’t see the quick progress that you expect. On the flip side, it’s important to change it up to keep yourself interested.  Vary your exercises to keep your muscles guessing.  Your body gets used to a routine and doesn’t need to adjust after awhile, so keep changing it up and shock your system. Be consistent but change it up –  Two completely contradictory pieces of...

Space Travel HERTS

In the post-Voyager era of deep space flight, spacecraft propulsion designs feel like science fiction.  Instead of using rockets and a thermonuclear generator to produce heat, we have things like solar sails, laser sails, and ion propulsion.  These all take advantage of the vastness of space to create a slow-but-continuous acceleration that can get spacecraft moving at incredible speeds. Of course, even at incredible speeds it will still take decades to reach other stars, but compared to Voyager, it’s a step in the right direction. If you want to get to the outer solar system quickly, try the Heliopause Electrostatic...

Motivation Monday: The Shared Path

“No man is an island; entire of itself; Every man is a piece of the continent.” -John Donne It’s easy to feel alone sometimes.  We feel as if our feelings of anger, shame, or sadness are ours alone.  The rest of the world, in the meantime, is happy, confident, and energetic.  As a counter to this you’ve probably heard that we compare our behind-the-scenes to everyone else’s highlight reel.  Well not only is that true, but it’s also true that we are not the only ones to feel these emotions.  We, as humans, never realize how much deeper our similarities...

Motivation Monday: Recovery

The world is a hard place.  We all fall and crash into it from time to time.  Failure hurts, whether it’s your first time or your 500th. And we all feel it.  Everyone fails, no one is exempt. Even people who you consider wildly successful have failed, probably more often than you would think, or they would admit.  And because we all fail, we all need some time to pick ourselves up, dust off, and get back in the game.  Because if there is one thing that’s absolutely true, it’s that failure is only permanent if you stop trying.  So get...

Motivation Monday: The Little Victories

The difficulties and struggles of today are but the price we must pay for the accomplishments and victories of tomorrow. – William J. H. Boetcker There’s a goal you have in mind.  It’s big, it’s difficult to achieve, and if you succeed it will look good to everyone else who sees you accomplish it.  People will envy you and wonder how you did it.  they will see the huge difference it has made in your life and it will inspire them.  But there is a lot that they don’t see. I’ve talked about the grind, the adjustment, the focus and...

Motivation Monday: The Rocky Road

When the circumstances of life are great, it makes sense to try and keep them that way.  After we work so hard to get our life on the right track, we can become fearful of any subtle changes that derail our progress.  But positive action and progression toward a goal do not follow a straight pathway.  It doesn’t matter whether your goal is about work, fitness, hobbies, relationships, or finances.  There will be periods of time where you feel like you are making progress and periods where the progress is subtle or unmeasurable, and you want to give up. The...

Motivation Monday: Momentum

“Go back?” he thought. “No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible! Go forward? Only thing to do! On we go!” So up he got, and trotted along with his little sword held in front of him and one hand feeling the wall, and his heart all of a patter and a pitter.” – J.R.R. Tolkien “The Hobbit”   You can start with a step, then another.  The steps build and become a slow walk, then a fast one, and then a trot.  The next thing you know, you’re jogging, faster and faster, then it’s a run.  The energy builds as...
