Reproducible Results and Baby Planets

When I report science news, discuss new discoveries, and get excited about new results, it can be difficult to hear that little voice in the back of my mind that says ‘reproducible results.’  It’s the voice of the pure scientist that reminds me to be critical of the things I read, and be open to critical review for the things I write and say. Any result isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on unless it can be independently reproduced.  This is a key to scientific advancement.  If the result can’t be reproduced, then something is wrong.  It may be an error with...

Motivation Monday: Consistency or Change?

You’ve heard the advice before.  Be consistent to be successful over the long term.  Do the same basic things, eat less, move more, and don’t expect quick results.  It takes time to lose fat and gain muscle, and you won’t see the quick progress that you expect. On the flip side, it’s important to change it up to keep yourself interested.  Vary your exercises to keep your muscles guessing.  Your body gets used to a routine and doesn’t need to adjust after awhile, so keep changing it up and shock your system. Be consistent but change it up –  Two completely contradictory pieces of...

Motivation Monday: Start Now!

Now! Right now! Forget about reading this post, go out and do that thing that you should be doing to make your life better. Go! Now that we got that out of the way, let’s talk about why starting now is better than starting later.  There are so many excuses you can make when there’s something you want to do.  “There’s not enough time,” “I need to learn more or build a skill first,” “That just isn’t possible for me,” “I have to give up everything I have now.” It’s hard to start something new and work toward something different...

Motivation Monday: How to Level Up and Learn New Skills

As Gaming has clawed its way into our culture, the term ‘level up’ has taken on a whole new meaning.  Suddenly a level up is not just a desired progression point in a video game, its a term we use to describe exciting milestones in our own lives, most notably with learning skills. A big part of skill building and progression is the transition through the following levels: 1. You don’t know what you don’t know (unconscious incompetence) – You have no idea what the skill involves, and you have no idea how much you don’t know about it.  You continue...

Motivation Monday: Why New Years Resolutions don’t Work (And why we think they will)

Ah 2015, a new year, a new chance to do things right.  This year life is going to be better, this year I’ll do everything I’ve dreamed of, this year is the year of great changes!  Sound familiar? Maybe you said that this year, or at the start of 2014, or 2013, or every year prior. It’s okay, we all make resolutions, even if we aren’t the type of person who makes resolutions.  There’s just something about the New Year that inspires us to make a fresh start and shed all of the hardships from the previous year.  We have...
