Motivation Monday (On Tuesday): Small Adjustments

As I move past week 8 of my new workout regiment, I find myself thinking about two things: I’m getting used to this workout, and need to spice things up I have a 10K run coming up in 10 weeks, and I have a goal time of 60 minutes. With a race and a major goal coming up, I am thinking about more specific training – to drop some weight, increase my stamina, and up my running pace.  Combine that with the need to change up my workouts, and it’s time for a new routine. Adjusting the process can be...

Motivation Monday: The Little Victories

The difficulties and struggles of today are but the price we must pay for the accomplishments and victories of tomorrow. – William J. H. Boetcker There’s a goal you have in mind.  It’s big, it’s difficult to achieve, and if you succeed it will look good to everyone else who sees you accomplish it.  People will envy you and wonder how you did it.  they will see the huge difference it has made in your life and it will inspire them.  But there is a lot that they don’t see. I’ve talked about the grind, the adjustment, the focus and...

Motivation Monday: Perfection

When you imagine yourself in the future, do you see yourself perfecting something? Are you a perfect spouse? A perfect athlete? A perfect musician? Do you have a perfect body? A perfect job? A perfect life? It may be fun to dream about it, but perfection just doesn’t exist.  Being a young dreamer makes the idea of things being perfect in the future an exercise in hope, but when you get to the future, things don’t become more perfect.  If anything, they become more complicated, less perfect. The world is fascinated by those who are the best, the closest to...

Motivation Monday: Fail Better

We’re more than a week into the new year, and I’m sure some of you have already given up on your new year’s resolutions and goals.  It happens, so don’t beat yourself up, especially since I consider failure part of the process.  In fact, failure is a necessary step to reaching success. So often we see failure as the end, the stopping point in our goal, so we have to bring our effort to a halt and start again.  But if there is one important lesson I’ve learned in the last few years, it’s that failure can’t stop anyone from succeeding. ...

Motivation Monday: Smile – You’ve got it Good!

I woke up at 5:30am this morning.  It sucked. It was pitch dark but I had to get out and beat traffic.  I fed the cats, got dressed, had breakfast, then drove to the gym for a 6am workout.  Still dark.  Finished my workout, had a shower, got back in the car, still dark out, and drove to work, sitting in traffic.  People were cutting each other off, tailgating, and doing everything from eating to putting on makeup in the car.  This is a normal day driving in Toronto, and I was thinking about how people curse and complain and...

Motivation Monday: Learning to Learn

There is no question that student debt is increasing.  Since 2000, student debt in North America has grown by over 500%.  Tuition goes up, cost of living goes up, and students end up with more debt.  This wouldn’t be a huge problem if wages and salaries increased proportionately, but they don’t.  There are also less jobs available for students when they graduate.  So basically the cost of everything is going up, and when you finish school you have little hope of getting a good job in your field, and even if you do, you certainly won’t be paid an appropriate...

Motivation Monday: Fear

I am afraid. You are too. We are all afraid of something, and it’s not a bad thing, at least not always.  Sometimes, our fear is a natural reaction that truly can save our life.  But more often than not, I would argue, it prevents us from doing something that really wasn’t that dangerous in the first place and would have given us some kind of benefit in the long term. Why do we fear things? It’s all an evolutionary mechanism that has given our species a survival advantage for hundreds of thousands of years, since before we had all the...

Motivation Monday: The Detriment of Perfectionism

I am a perfectionist.  This means that although I work very hard on projects to put my best work forward, I also have a tendency to hold my own work to an insanely high standard.  It also means that when I see the incredible successes of others, I beat myself down for what I feel I haven’t yet accomplished.  It often leads to stress because I can almost never reach my own high standards, and depression occasionally follows because they can’t be met.  I have curbed these tendencies over the years, by understanding exactly what I need to feel accomplished,...

Motivation Monday: Opportunity

Opportunity.  It means you have a chance.  One Chance, to give it everything you have to claim what you’ve always wanted.  Chances like this don’t come along often.  You’ve spent years working hard, educating yourself, building your list of contacts, doing the work for free, all in hopes of getting a shot at the big time.  But are you willing to give everything you’ve got to change your entire life? Are you willing to take a leap and give up everything you’ve worked on just for a shot at the big time? Not everyone is willing to risk it.  We...

Motivation Monday: Motivation for Mondays

Why do I do these posts on Monday? Is it because of the alliteration that makes it catchy and draws you to these posts? A little bit.  but the main reason behind making a weekly motivation post on a Monday is that for most people, Monday is the beginning of the week, a fresh start after everything that happened last week. Why do so many people despise Monday? For most, it’s the end of time off with the ones they love and back to the work for five days.  There is an innate dread for the start of a long...
